In alignment with their goals of fiscal and environmental stewardship, Lawrence’s Merc Co-op decided in 2016 to install solar panels on and around their building. They selected Cromwell Solar for the project, based on our experience with large-scale solar installations and dedication to sustainability.
Not only did we add solar to their rooftop, but the Merc went above and beyond by adding two solar-panel-covered carports with EV chargers and a solar pergola to their building. These panels are bifacial, meaning they produce power from light hitting both the top and bottom of the panel. Altogether, the panels produce enough energy to offset 29% of their electricity needs, saving $1.8 million dollars for customers over the course of 25 years.
Solar Installation Details:
Location: Lawrence, Kansas
System Components: 688 solar panels installed on rooftop, pergola and two carports. Four EV chargers for customers.
Generation Capacity: 297,690 kWh per year, or 29% of the Merc’s energy needs.
Environmental Impact: Avoids 330 tons of CO2 per year.
